EMDR Consultation

Consultation For EMDR & IFS Trained Clinicians

Are you a therapist or mental health professional looking to become certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)?

As a therapist and EMDR International Association (EMDRIA)-approved Consultant In Training (CIT) with decades of experience in the field, I understand how challenging it can be to commit to ongoing career advancement—especially when you’re already practicing and managing a full caseload. The lack of balance and burnout are real hurdles, and many of us have put aspects of our professional development on pause following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Yet, without the necessary skill sets to implement and support highly structured modalities like EMDR, our work, our clients, and our own mental health will suffer. Becoming certified allows us to safely conduct treatment, understand how to apply EMDR within certain contexts and alongside other modalities, and be supported by an experienced clinician who can help integrate practices that lessen the impact of potential vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue in our own lives.

As an EMDR consultant, I am available to mental health professionals who:

  • Seek enhanced EMDR competency, training, and certification.

  • Struggle to implement EMDR and/or experience backlash with their clients.

  • Want to bring EMDR to populations of complex trauma survivors.

  • Are looking to integrate EMDR and Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy.

I have witnessed firsthand how well Internal Family Systems (IFS) pairs with EMDR and am passionate about helping therapists integrate IFS into their practice. If you are an IFS therapist working towards your EMDR certification—or, conversely, if you are certified in EMDR yet curious about how parts work can support the EMDR protocol—my consultation services will be a great match for you.

Working together, I will tailor the consultation process to your unique concerns and client demographic, aiding you in becoming the most effective and resourced clinician possible.

How Does Consultation Help EMDR Therapists?

Despite being highly structured, EMDR is an incredibly nuanced modality. However, those who get certified often take a one-size-fits-all approach, overlooking the ways that specific therapeutic strengths, skills, and specialties can be leveraged when EMDR is efficiently—and intentionally—integrated into one’s practice.

The renowned trauma expert Marylene Cloitre continues to argue that a multi-intervention, multi-method approach to trauma treatment yields the best outcomes.[1] And because IFS offers an attachment foundation for understanding complex trauma, it can be a deeply meaningful tool in EMDR treatment.

Consultation with a skilled and experienced integrative therapist will help you bridge the gap between a textbook understanding of EMDR protocol and a deep, transformative approach to treatment that will facilitate lasting change in the lives of your clients. Allow me to support you in bolstering your competence and confidence in EMDR.

What To Expect

I have been using EMDR in my practice since 2006 and am approved as a CIT through the EMDR International Association. I am familiar with the many areas where EMDR therapists become “stuck” and look forward to the opportunity to help consultees successfully integrate this modality, paving the way toward certification.

Before you get started with me in advanced training and consultation, it’s expected that you:

  • Have completed EMDR Basic Training (weekends 1 & 2).

  • Are eligible to earn hours towards EMDR certification.

  • Are already certified but looking to bolster your EMDR skills and/or integrate IFS.

Our time together will be structured according to EMDRIA’s consultation protocol and conducted online via Zoom. I will also provide you with case consultation so that you can receive individualized, ongoing professional feedback.

As mental health professionals, each one of us deserves mentorship and the opportunity to become the best clinician possible. Even if you’ve hit a plateau in your career or feel burnt out—it’s okay. I am here to support you in your growth as a therapist. With EMDR consultation, you can improve and re-energize your practice as you develop your confidence and establish your unique style as an EMDR-certified therapist.

Common Questions About EMDR Consultation…

Is EMDR consultation a worthwhile career investment?

Spending the time and money to pursue EMDR certification is an investment in your career—and yourself. As you hone your skills and feel increasingly competent in knowing when and how to apply EMDR, you will likely see great progress among your clients and your own levels of stress and burnout.

Being EMDR-certified ultimately translates to more referrals and clients looking for your specific expertise. By this measure, EMDR consultation is absolutely a worthwhile investment in your professional growth and career!

Despite being trained in EMDR, I am not sure I want to use it.

I work with a lot of therapists who feel uncertain about implementing EMDR, even if they are already trained in trauma-processing models. Yet, research shows that continued consultation reinforces motivation in newly trained EMDR clinicians.[2] Because it is valuable for helping consultees overcome hesitancy and fear, a consultation can be key in the shift from simply being trained in EMDR to being a competent, skilled EMDR therapist.

I only see clients online—can I still integrate EMDR into their treatment?

Absolutely! EMDR is equally effective whether it’s done online or in person—and in fact, my counseling practice has been fully virtual since 2020. When offered via telehealth, EMDR can be more accessible to a wider range of clients whose lives have been impacted by complex trauma.[3]

Part of the consultation process will include working with you to review options for telehealth and the most current EMDRIA recommendations for providing EMDR online.
