Daphne Fatter, PhD

Trauma Educator, Consultant & Author

I am a licensed psychologist with twenty years treating PTSD and complex trauma, an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, and the author of Integrating Internal Family Systems (IFS) into EMDR Therapy. I completed my postdoctoral fellowship at The Trauma Center under Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, and I have provided continuing education since 2016 across the US, Canada, Latin America, Europe, and Australia.

I bring trauma training your audience can use. Conferences, professional associations, universities, agencies, and military bases hire me to teach their people how to treat trauma well. Your audience gets interventions based on research and neuroscience they can apply, and skills they can use in their next session.

Speaking Topics

What I speak on.

Traumatic stress is multilayered. Relational, developmental, biological, cultural, systemic, collective, historical, and spiritual. Every session works from that, and I tailor the depth and the examples to who is in your room and what populations you serve.

Integrating IFS into EMDR for Complex Trauma

Bringing the IFS model together with EMDR, the integration I developed in my own sessions and then wrote the step-by-step guide to. What the research and the neuroscience say about a client's readiness before reprocessing, and what your options are when treatment is not moving.

For audiences who already have clinical trauma training. I am EMDR certified, an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, and trained in EMDR 2.0 and the Flash Technique. She is an expert clinician in IFS therapy, having completed over 460 hours of training, including her Level 3 training with Dr. Richard Schwartz, the founder of IFS therapy.

Your audience will be able to:

  • Describe how Parts Work and EMDR answer different clinical questions
  • Recognize the signs a client is not yet ready for trauma reprocessing
  • Name at least two interventions for a session where reprocessing stalls or loops

Delivered as: Integrating Traumatic Memories: Conceptualization and Clinical Considerations in Evidence-Based Approaches to Trauma Processing.

Trauma-Informed Care and Parts Work

Reading what a client's nervous system is telling you, trauma-informed stabilization tools, and working with protective parts. I also teach STARR®, Self-Tapping for Attachment Readiness and Repair, the intervention I created, presented at the 2023 IFS Institute International Conference and published in a 2023 book chapter (which was republished in 2025).

For mixed-experience clinical audiences, including teams newer to trauma-informed practice. I served as Military Sexual Trauma Coordinator at the Fort Worth VA and I provide training on military bases. I also have experience teaching to clinicians working in group private practices, community mental health, inpatient and intensive outpatient programs, and college counseling centers.

Your audience will be able to:

  • Identify nervous system cues that signal a client's window of tolerance
  • Apply polyvagal-informed stabilization tools in a session
  • Describe how protective parts show up in trauma treatment

Delivered as: Utilizing Phase-Oriented Treatment and Adjunctive Interventions to Regulate Arousal in Trauma Treatment.

Values-Based Decision Making and Self-Compassion

A process for making hard decisions in relationships and in life, drawn from my second book. People come to this one having struggled alone for a long time, carrying shame about what they are considering, with no clear path either way.

For general audiences, and suited to programs on relationships, life decisions, and self-compassion. I am also the author of Part of Me Wants to Leave, Part of Me Wants to Stay: How to Know If It's Time to End Your Relationship.

Your audience will leave with:

  • A way to name what they are feeling and thinking about the relationship
  • Self-compassion practices and resilience strategies they can use on their own
  • A process for identifying their values and making the decision from there

Past Speaking & Conferences

What makes me different is that I tailor the training to every audience's specific needs. I want to know what clients they work with and what setting they practice in before I decide what to teach.

At the Newman Institute, we train thousands of trauma therapists across Latin America, so we are careful about who we host. Daphne Fatter's Integrating IFS into EMDR course was one of the strongest we have offered. Therapists left with a step-by-step way to bring Internal Family Systems into EMDR reprocessing with complex and dissociative clients.

Daphne led our team in a thorough, practical, and inspiring training on trauma assessment and treatment. Her training is easy to understand while going deep at the same time, allowing both new and seasoned providers to take away meaningful tools and insights. Daphne was so accessible to work with, and she tailored her training specifically to the unique needs of our team. Pretty impressive for someone as renowned and as busy as she is! Our team left better equipped, more confident, and energized to continue meaningful, life-changing work with our clients.

Group Practice Owner, New Hope Healing, Urbandale, Iowa

Daphne gave a workshop to our group, and she is clearly an expert in a variety of psychotherapy areas. Her engagement with us as co-learners, with humility and connectivity, helped everyone settle in, participate in role play and question asking, and be genuine and honest about where we all were with our understanding of the material. She seamlessly balances her dissemination of information, principles, and techniques with empirical evidence alongside clinical anecdotes and role play. We felt we all left the workshop better prepared to help our clients.

Dr. Daphne Fatter is one of the best people I know when it comes to integrating IFS into EMDR therapy in a way that is practical, thoughtful, and usable with clients. She doesn't just teach theory. Daphne gives clinicians concrete tools, like parts mapping and STARR® self-tapping, that they can use immediately while keeping consent, attunement, and client overwhelm front and center. As an author, educator, and consultant, Daphne has a rare ability to make complex clinical work feel clear and doable. I recommend her work without hesitation to EMDR therapists working with complex trauma.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions I get asked the most.

If your question is not answered here, please send it along with your inquiry.

Are you available to speak at our conference?

Link to Open the Accordion

Most likely, and the fastest way to know is to send me your date. I speak in the US and internationally, in person and virtually. I say yes when the topic and the audience are a good fit for my experience and education.

Do you travel?

Link to Open the Accordion

Yes. Domestic and international travel are both part of my speaking work.

Do you speak virtually?

Link to Open the Accordion

Yes. Virtual sessions are held on Zoom, and I use breakout rooms when the format allows skills practice.

Can your session carry continuing education credit?

Link to Open the Accordion

Sometimes. Many host organizations and continuing education companies provide credit for their own attendees. I can offer EMDRIA-approved EMDR credit when we plan for it three months out, because that is how long the EMDRIA application takes.

Can you tailor a session to our program theme?

Link to Open the Accordion

Yes, and I prefer to. I can adjust the depth, the examples, and the length, and I can build the session around a theme your program is already organized on.

Do you speak to audiences outside of clinical settings?

Link to Open the Accordion

Yes. My session on values-based decision making and self-compassion is built for general audiences, and it comes out of my second book, Part of Me Wants to Leave, Part of Me Wants to Stay. It is for people deciding whether to stay in a relationship or leave it, often without having told anyone they are struggling. It suits programs on relationships, life decisions, grief, and self-compassion.

Do you use a contract?

Link to Open the Accordion

Yes. I use a contract for every engagement so that expectations are clear on both sides.

How long are your sessions?

Link to Open the Accordion

Most conference and summit sessions run one to three hours. Half day and full day trainings for teams and bases run longer, and I shape the length around your program.

What are your speaking fees?

Link to Open the Accordion

Fees vary so much from one engagement to the next that I share them by request. Send me your date, your format, and your audience, and I will follow up with fees for your event.

Will you do a podcast interview?

Link to Open the Accordion

Yes. Reach out with your show, your audience, and the topic you have in mind.

Do you provide learning objectives for our CE application?

Link to Open the Accordion

Yes. They come in the proposal along with the session description and content outline, formatted so you can drop them straight into your CE paperwork.
